Early 20th Century Guatemalan Huipil – Santo Tomás Chichicastenango
This traditional huipil, dating to the early 20th century, is handwoven from cotton and dyed in the distinctive style of Santo Tomás Chichicastenango.
Decorative elements are focused on the shoulders and sleeves, featuring the iconic double eagle motif—an important symbol in local mythology. In Chichicastenango, the two-headed bird represents a powerful sun god who sees both the good and the bad in the world.
Though it has some staining consistent with age, the huipil remains in very good vintage condition and is a remarkable example of indigenous artistry and cultural symbolism.
